Compliance to new European directives
Our UVB-UVA sunscreens are tested and checked in conformity with European regulations: The new European recommendation has been taken on-board to guarantee a high level of protection for the health of European citizens. The European Community has indeed judged it necessary to stipulate the minimum protection that a sunscreen must provide, whether in respect of UVBs which cause sunburn but also, and this is new, UVAs which cause premature ageing.
The minimum sun protection factor is SPF 6.
The wording “sun block” is no longer used.
Harmonisation of testing methods: in order to harmonise the testing processes for sunscreen products, the text gives the recommended methods, that is to say the international SPF method for the testing of sunscreens against sun burn and the PPD method for testing the protection against UVA.
Sun care products must offer protection against both UVB and UVA. Only suncare products which have a SPF/PPD ratio equal to or less than 3 can claim to be a sunscreen.
Simplification and grouping of products according to protection categories: the range of protection factors has been reduced to make it easier to compare different products without reducing the choice available to consumers. The new recommendation, for example, sets the minimum protection factor at 6 and the maximum as 50+. Each protection factor is given a name to describe the category of sunscreen - low, medium, high, very high - so as to give clear information.
